MITCHELL — On the second play from scrimmage, Aberdeen senior quarterback Sam Rohlfs found a wide-open Jacob Merxbauer downfield for a 61-yard strike in a game that the Golden Eagles led from wire-to-wire on Saturday at Joe Quintal Field. Aberdeen (3-0) stayed unbeaten against Mitchell (1-2) with a 33-14 victory
Merxbauer scored three times in the first half with two reception scores and one more coming an an 11-yard touchdown run on a reverse play.
Mitchell actually outgained Aberdeen in total yards in the game 367 yards to 348, but saw penalties loom large. Mitchell drew nine penalties for 113 yards.
Treyson Shultz scored both of Mitchell’s touchdowns. Shultz capped off a 12-play, 74-yard drive with a two-yard run with 3:27 left in the second quarter to make the score 20-7 in favor of Aberdeen. Shultz’s second score was a 55-yard run up the sideline on Mitchell’s first drive of the second half. That score cut the Aberdeen lead to 13, but Mtichell was unable to push the game any closer.
Next up, Mitchell hosts Tea Area on Friday at home at 7 p.m. Aberdeen will be on the road against Brookings.
