A former Avera nurse was sentenced to jail time and probation after pleading guilty to mishandling prescriptions of tramadol. Ashley Schuldt of Mitchell was originally charged with seven counts of misrepresentation to obtain a controlled substance. She agreed to a plea deal, and six of the counts were dropped. In sentencing Schuldt to twenty days in county jail, Judge Chris Giles noted the seriousness of the crime and how Schuldt violated professional standards and trust as a professional. However, Giles also granted Schuldt a suspended imposition of sentence, which seals her conviction as long as she does not break the law in the future. Giles noted that Schuldt did not use any of the fraudulently obtained drugs herself, and she has essentially been on probation for eight months already with no issues.
