Friday night April 19th was the 2024 South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls that featured Two Top Mitchell Kernels Boys and Girls Senior Basketball players Sawyer Stoebner and Gavin Soukup. This would be the last time that these two Mitchell Kernels Senior Basketball players would suit up in their black and gold gear.
The first game of the evening featured the best Seniors boys’ basketball players in the State of South Dakota as you had the Blue team all-stars vs the White team all-stars. This was a thrilling game that went back and forth as both team’s players were contesting every shot and diving for loose balls on the court. But the Blue team’s all-stars found a way to get back into the game only trailing by eight 58 to 50 at the break. The Mitchell Kernels Senior Gavin Soukup had a great start in the third quarters as his three-pointer sparked a 12 to 4 run to open the third.
The Blue team was down at the half to start the third but would outscore the White team 30 to 19 over the next seven minutes and pull to within one point of the lead heading into the fourth quarter down 81 to 80 after three. The Blue team then proceeded to outscore the White team late as they finished out the game outscoring them 34 to 29 in the fourth quarter for the 114 to 110 victory. The Mitchell Kernels Senior Gavin Soukup finished the game scoring fourteens points, added two rebounds and two assists.
The Head Coach of the Blue Teams All-Stars is the Head Coach of the Mitchell Kernels Boys Basketball Team Ryker Kreutzfeldt who was the winning Head Coach. He was also honored as he received his Class AA Championship basketball at halftime from the Head Coach of the Mitchell Kernels Girls Basketball Team Dave Brooks. The Blue Team Senior All-Stars posed for their team photo at the end of the game.
The SDBCA Girls All-Star game also featured the top Senior girls All-Stars in South Dakota that included the Mitchell Kernels Senior Sawyer Stoebner. The girls’ team blue All-Stars won the game 86 to 74 as they were led by Florence Henrys Caylin Kelly who had a team high 17 points. The Mitchell Kernels Sawyer Stoebner finished with six points, three rebounds and one assist.
This was also a very close game between the White team all-stars and the Blue team all-stars as the White team all-stars led by two after one 20 to 18. The Blue team all-stars would close the gap as the game was tied 35 all at halftime. This tightly contested contest would stay close as the Blue team all-stars led by one after three 55 to 54. The Blue team all-stars would go on a 31 to 20 run to close out the game and win by the final of 86 to 74. Both the all-star team’s players shook hands at the end of the game.
. The Mitchell Kernels Senior Sawyer Stoebner was also in the running for the High School Basketball Player of the Year Award that was won by Tea Area’s Senior Basketball player Katie Vasecka.
The Head Coach of the Girls Blue Teams Senior All-Stars was Centerville’s Tucker Tornberg and the Assistant Coach of the Blue Teams Senior All-Stars Team is the Mitchell Kernels Girls Basketball Head Coach Dave Brooks. What great way to officially finish the thrilling South Dakota Boys and Girls Basketball Season with two very exciting All-Star Basketball games as the winning Blue Team Senior All-Stars posed for their team picture.
