PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota voters will see that updated residency requirements for voter registration has gone into effect. Secretary of State Monae Johnson says the changes clarify who qualifies as a resident. Under the revised law, a resident is defined as someone who lives and usually sleeps in a fixed dwelling for at least 30 consecutive days. Voters temporarily away from the state will still be considered residents if they intend to return. Johnson says the updates aim to provide consistency for voters and election officials.
