MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The South Dakota Department of Health is celebrating 25 years of Bright Start, a home visiting program that’s helped more than 5,000 families since its launch in 1999. Bright Start pairs registered nurses with pregnant women, providing in-home support, education, and resources through the child’s second birthday. Originally launched in just two cities, the program now serves families statewide, with a focus on rural and underserved communities. Health officials say the program plays a critical role in improving maternal and infant health and reducing the risk of postpartum depression and unsafe sleep.
