MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) —It’s a full weekend for area teams, with playoff football kicking off tonight, DWU hosting multiple events, and SDSU squads in action on the road. From local gridiron battles to college tournaments, Mitchell’s sports scene is buzzing.

Class 11AA

  • 3 seed Pierre T.F. Riggs @ No. 2 seed Huron at 7pm

Class 9AA

  • 5 seed Hamlin @ No. 1 seed Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy at 7pm
  • 3 seed Parkston @ No. 2 seed Elkton-Lake Benton at 7pm (on KOOL 98.3 w/Paul Lasley)

Class 9A

  • 7 seed Howard @ No. 3 seed Alcester Hudson at 7pm

Class 9B

Mitchell Volleyball

The Kernel volleyball team battled with O’Gorman for their Senior Night in Mitchell last night. They came away with a tough result on senior night and lost to O’Gorman in straight sets, 3-0.

DWU Wrestling

The men’s wrestling team will be in town this weekend. They’ll be in the DWU Sports & Wellness Complex hosting the DWU Open tomorrow. It’ll begin at 9am. The women will be on the road competing in the Waldorf Open tomorrow in Forest City, Iowa. They’ll start at 9am in the Hanson Fieldhouse.

DWU Cross Country

The Tiger cross country teams each have Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships tomorrow. They’ll be at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park in Ashland, NE. Women get started at 10:45am and the men start at 11:30am.

DWU Football

The Tiger football team will be playing in Mitchell this weekend. They will be in town taking on the Midland Warriors at Joe Quintal Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.

DWU Volleyball

The (RV) Tiger volleyball team will be home hosting Dordt tomorrow night. They’ll play in the Christen Athletic Center to begin GPAC Tournament action in the Quarterfinals. DWU is the 4 seed and Dordt is the 5 seed. First serve will be at 7pm.

DWU Basketball

The No. 9 ranked women’s basketball team will see action again today on the road. They’ll be in Seward, NE taking on No. 13 ranked MidAmerica Nazerene at Friedrich Arena at 2pm. Then both teams will play tomorrow and will take on different teams in separate locations. The women will face No. 18 ranked Arizona Christian, also in Seward, NE with tipoff at 10am. The men will be in Hannibal, MO and play Hannibal-LaGrange at the Mabee Sports Complex and start at 3pm.

SDSU Basketball

The Jackrabbit basketball teams are staying busy. The (RV) women’s basketball team (1-0) will take on Rice (0-0) tonight at 7pm at First Bank & Trust Arena in Brookings, SD. Last night, the men played the Dakota State Trojans and barely got past them to win, 68-62.

SDSU Football

The No. 9 ranked Jackrabbit football team is on the road this weekend. They’ll look to end their two-game losing streak in the Interstate Series against the University of South Dakota tomorrow afternoon in Vermillion, SD. Kickoff against the Coyotes in the DakotaDome will be at 3pm on ESPNU/ESPN+.

NFL

Thursday Night Football last night featured the Las Vegas Raiders at the Denver Broncos. It was a messy game, and it was a low scoring affair. It was a defensive game for certain, and the Broncos escaped with a 10-7 win over the Raiders.

NBA

The Minnesota Timberwolves (4-4) will have NBA Cup – Group Play tonight. They’ll face the Utah Jazz (3-5) at home in Minneapolis. Tipoff is set for 7pm on NBA League Pass.
