MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Demolition of the former Mitchell High School is now underway following unexpected delays tied to decades-old asbestos documentation.
Crews began tearing down the building Wednesday after an error was discovered on an asbestos mitigation form dating back more than 40 years. A reinspection of the site found no asbestos concerns and confirmed that all previous removal had been handled properly.
The demolition comes after students and staff have spent nearly a full school year in the new Mitchell High School. Superintendent Joe Childs said the new facility has met expectations and provided a positive learning environment.
While much of the old structure will be removed, some historic elements will be preserved. The original flagpole will remain, and keepsakes from the building will be made available to community members interested in remembering the school’s history.
District leaders say the demolition marks the end of an era while making way for future opportunities on the site.
