MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A major cost-saving decision could shape the future of Lake Mitchell as city officials explore an alternative to rebuilding the lake’s dam.

New engineering data shows the existing dam and spillway do not meet current South Dakota flood standards. However, engineers determined that replacing the structure may not provide additional protection downstream, despite requiring a much larger design.

A full reconstruction would involve doubling the dam’s width, creating a more expensive project for the city.

Instead, Mitchell leaders are seeking a state variance that would allow the current dam to remain in place. Officials say obtaining that approval is important to moving forward with long-discussed improvements to Lake Mitchell.

City leaders believe the variance could help avoid unnecessary costs while still maintaining safety and functionality.

The South Dakota Water Management Board is expected to consider the request in early May. A decision could determine the timeline and scope of future lake improvement efforts.
