MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The City of Mitchell is developing a Safety Action Plan (SAP) focused on eliminating fatal and serious injury crashes throughout the community by 2050.

The plan expands on the 2023 Mitchell Area Master Transportation Plan and aligns with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program and Safe System Approach guidelines.

Key components of the plan include identifying a High Injury Network (HIN), which pinpoints intersections and corridor segments with elevated crash rates; a Systemic Risk Network (SRN), highlighting areas with risk factors such as speeding or vulnerable road users; and a Safety Priority Network (SPN), which will guide future safety improvement projects.

City officials are encouraging residents to participate in a travel survey to better understand transportation safety concerns and priorities. Feedback will help shape final recommendations and project prioritization.

The study area encompasses the Mitchell city limits and surrounding transportation corridors. Public input will be incorporated as the plan moves toward completion.

Residents can access the survey by scanning a QR code provided by the city or through official city communication channels.

For more information, residents may contact Public Works Director/City Engineer Joe Schroeder or HDR Consultant Project Manager Tom Cook.
