MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) The City of Mitchell is reminding residents to check that their sump pumps are working properly and that the water they collect is draining to the right place.

In a Sept. 21 notice, the city recommended directing sump pump discharge toward the curb when possible. Residents should avoid sending it into a backyard where the water could seep back toward their home or a neighbor’s property.

Keep sump pump water out of floor drains

Mitchell’s municipal code prohibits sending stormwater and groundwater into the sanitary sewer system. That includes water collected by a sump pump. The city specifically warns residents against connecting a sump pump to a floor drain or the sanitary sewer.

The concern extends beyond one house: According to the city, improper discharge can contribute to a sewer backup affecting the property or its neighbors.

What residents can check

Residents can check that their pump turns on and that its discharge line carries water away from the house. They can then look at where the line ends. The city recommends drainage toward the curb where possible, while avoiding a spot that sends water back into the ground near a home.
