MITCHELL, S.D. — Election night totals provide an early look at how voters cast their ballots, but the official record comes through a separate process called canvassing.
For Mitchell and Davison County voters, the next scheduled step is Thursday, Nov. 5. County commissioners will canvass the general election at 9:15 a.m. at the North Offices Building.
Why are election night results unofficial?
The South Dakota Secretary of State’s results website labels election night returns unofficial. Those numbers give the public access to reported vote totals before the formal canvassing process establishes the official record.
Even when all precincts have reported, reporting totals and certifying results are separate steps.
What happens during the county canvass?
The canvassing board examines precinct election returns and prepares an abstract, or official summary, of votes cast for candidates and ballot questions.
Following a primary or general election canvass, the county auditor sends a certified copy of the county’s official canvass to the secretary of state. Those certified county returns are used in the statewide canvass.
When does South Dakota canvass statewide results?
South Dakota’s statewide canvass takes place seven days after the general election, placing that step on Nov. 10 for the 2026 election. If returns from all counties have not arrived, state law allows the board to adjourn and reconvene within the prescribed timeline.
Where can Mitchell voters follow results?
Residents can select Davison County on the secretary of state’s election results website to follow reported county totals. For local canvassing information, meeting updates or questions about election records, contact the Davison County Auditor’s Office at 605-995-8608.
