MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The Internal Revenue Service is encouraging taxpayers to review withholding, organize financial records and protect personal information now to help avoid surprises during the 2027 tax filing season.

In a release provided to Mitchell Now, the agency said year-round planning can help taxpayers understand how changes in income or family circumstances could affect their returns.

Taxpayers can use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to review federal income tax withheld from their paychecks. Marriage, divorce, the birth or adoption of a child, or a job change may warrant a withholding review. Those needing adjustments should submit a new Form W-4 to their employer.

Small-business owners, self-employed taxpayers and gig workers with income that is not subject to withholding may need to make quarterly estimated tax payments, according to the agency.

The IRS also recommends keeping tax documents together using a paper or electronic filing system. Records should include W-2 and 1099 forms, digital asset transactions, previous returns, IRS correspondence and documentation supporting credits or deductions.

An IRS Individual Online Account allows taxpayers to access certain records, review balances, make payments and manage other routine tax matters.

The agency also warned taxpayers to watch for scams involving unexpected emails, texts, calls or social media messages. Taxpayers should avoid clicking links or opening attachments in unexpected messages claiming to come from the IRS. Suspicious emails and texts can be reported to phishing@irs.gov.
