MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A Mitchell man has been found guilty of two counts of first-degree rape involving children under the age of 13, according to the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office.

Attorney General Marty Jackley announced that Eric Mark Opperman, 48, entered a change of plea Thursday in Davison County Circuit Court. Following the plea, Opperman was found guilty on both charges.

According to prosecutors, the crimes occurred between 2013 and 2025 and involved children younger than 13 years old.

Under a written plea agreement, Opperman faces a maximum sentence of 85 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 25, 2026.

The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Mitchell Police Department.

The case is being prosecuted by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and the Davison County State’s Attorney’s Office.
