MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) Today, Wednesday, Oct. 28, is South Dakota Winter Weather Preparedness Day, a reminder for Mitchell-area residents to prepare before snow, ice and dangerous cold disrupt daily routines.

Preparation starts at home. The National Weather Service recommends stocking nonperishable food, drinking water, prescription medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights and extra batteries. Include supplies for infants and pets, and keep a battery-powered radio available for emergency information.

Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Review instructions for backup heating equipment and never operate a generator in an enclosed space.

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission also reminds natural gas customers to keep meters and vents clear of snow and ice. Gently remove buildup from meters with a broom or soft brush.

Vehicles should be ready before winter travel begins. Check tires, batteries, heaters and windshield wipers. Carry blankets, extra clothing, a phone charger, snacks, water, a flashlight, shovel, ice scraper and jumper cables. Keep the fuel tank near full.

Before leaving home, check forecasts and call 511 for road conditions. Tell someone your route and expected arrival time, and postpone unnecessary travel when conditions become dangerous.

Anyone working outdoors should dress in layers, wear a hat and mittens, and avoid overexertion. Farmers should arrange shelter, feed and water for livestock before storms develop. Pets also need adequate food, water and warm shelter.
