Mitchell Kernels football hosts the number one team in the Eastern South Dakota conference tonight in the 3-0 Tea Titans. Tea won the state title in 11-man A year before moving up to 11-man AA this season.

Tea offers a diverse offensive attack that has picked up yards in chunks this season and has blanked its past two opponents. Mitchell is coming off back-to-back losses against ranked opponents Pierre and Aberdeen Central.

“This week’s going to be very important that we play very focused on being disciplined in our responsibilities,” Kernels head football coach Kent VanOverschelde said. “Tea throws a lot of things at you, but like most teams they want to kind of move you out based on formation and then come at you in the same way.”

Despite the losses, Mitchell’s offense has moved the ball well in stretches this season and is outgaining opponents by nearly 300 yards. However, turnovers and penalties have been a back breaker for the Kernels. Mitchell is minus-six in the turnover differential and is averaging 111 yards of penalties per game through the first three weeks.

Kickoff for tonight’s game at Joe Quintal Field is at 7 p.m. and you can tune in on 103.5 Pure Oldies for pregame coverage beginning at 6:40 p.m.
