AGC of South Dakota announces annual award winners for 2023

Sioux Falls, SD (January 31, 2024) – The Associated General Contractors of South Dakota is proud to announce their annual award winners who were recognized during an Awards Banquet during at the annual State Convention January 10, 2024, at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, Sioux Falls, SD. AGC “Build South Dakota” Awards:
The Build South Dakota Award recognizes particular South Dakota highway-heavy-utilities construction projects completed in the past year. Projects demonstrate excellent management and client service, innovation in construction techniques or materials, community relations and/or sensitivity to the environment. The 2023 winners are (2):

Category I – (Projects less than $2.5 million dollars)
SFC Civil Constructors – Sioux Falls, SD – For Outstanding Highway-Heavy-Utility Construction Performed on the Day County Box Culvert Project in Waubay, South Dakota.
As an award winner, SFC Civil Constructors have chosen Make a Wish of South Dakota as their charity of choice to receive a $500 donation paid by the AGC of South Dakota. (photo attached)

Category II – (Projects between $2.5 and $10 million dollars)
Morris, Inc. – Pierre, SD – For Outstanding Highway-Heavy-Utility Construction Performed on the Capitol Lake Dredging Project in Pierre, South Dakota.
As an award winner, SFC Civil Constructors has chosen the Boys & Girls Club of the Capital Area as their charity of choice to receive a $500 donation paid by the AGC of South Dakota. (photo attached)

AGC “Golden Hard Hat” Award:
This award is a very special & prestigious award that recognizes an individual or company that has demonstrated outstanding skill, responsibility and integrity. Criteria include long-term performance, image, community,
involvement and promotion of the AGC. Over the years, only a select few have received this prestigious award. The 2024 winners is: Jim Soukup, Soukup Construction, Sioux Falls, SD

AGC “Continuous Membership” Awards:
The AGC of SD, HHU Chapter Continuous Membership Award recognizes companies who have been a member of AGC for 40+ Years. The 2023 recipients of the “40-year Continuous Membership Award” are: Bituminous Paving, Inc., Odessa, MN; D & G Concrete Const., Inc., Sioux Falls, SD; Loiseau Construction, Inc., Flandreau, SD; Opperman, Inc., Gregory, SD; and Dixon Bros, New Castle, WY.
The 2023 recipients of the “50-year Continuous Membership Award” are:
Asphalt Surfacing Co., Sioux Falls, SD; and Swingen Construction Co., Grand Forks, ND

AGC Safety Award for “Company Growth in Safety”:
This Company Growth in Safety award was established to recognize companies that exhibit Pro-Active and continued safety growth. The 2024 winner is: Tessiers, Inc., South Dakota

The AGC of South Dakota, Highway-Heavy-Utilities Chapter, is a voluntary trade association of more than 250 contractors, suppliers and service firms who build the roads, bridges and water/wastewater infrastructure in South Dakota.

Highlighting his conservative record, Jackley says he will prioritize public safety, border security, economic growth, and accountability in Washington while continuing to serve as AG.

Huron Contractor Sentenced for Defrauding Customers

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced that Huron contractor Julio Morales-Ortiz has been sentenced for defrauding seven customers out of more than $36,000. Morales-Ortiz pleaded guilty in Beadle County Circuit Court to theft by deception, receiving a suspended 10-year prison sentence, probation, and jail time.

Freedom Caucus Pushes Back on $650M Prison Plan

South Dakota lawmakers will meet in a special session to decide on a proposed $650 million men’s penitentiary in Sioux Falls, but members of the Freedom Caucus remain opposed. While Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen, who led the prison task force, says he’s confident in the plan’s passage, caucus members fear the price tag could balloon to $1 billion. Governor Rhoden’s office maintains the project is capped at $650 million.

Mitchell Plans Second Fire Station to Speed Up Response Times

Mitchell city officials are proposing a $2.5 million fire station on the north side of town to improve emergency response times and reduce insurance costs for residents. The station would be built near the old water treatment plant on Highway 37, with design work beginning in 2026 and an opening planned for 2027. City leaders say the new location will allow firefighters to reach the north side more quickly, while housing four firefighters who will share equipment with the current Public Safety building.
