PIERRE S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) An earthquake registering 4.0 on the Richter Scale hit the Pierre area yesterday (May 30, 2024). The earthquake’s force most likely did no damage to the Oahe Dam about 6 miles north of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
Eileen Williamson is the Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Northwestern Division. She says they have procedures in place to handle this type of event.
Coincidentally, Williamson says today, Friday May 31, is Dam Safety Awareness Day.
