MITCHELL, S.D.  (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell rental inspection taskforce is working on new rules for rental properties. The Mitchell Daily Republic reports the taskforce plans to inspect all non-owner-occupied rentals within three years, but first, they need to pass an ordinance and hire a rental inspector. The proposed fee is $12 annually per unit to cover inspection costs. The inspections will focus on safety features like smoke detectors and bathroom ventilation. The city is also figuring out how the rental inspector will work with the building inspector and fire marshal. New rules for short-term rentals like Airbnb’s are also in the works. Public input is welcome at the upcoming City Council meeting on January 21st.
