MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A South Dakota House Committee approved two bills on Monday related to voter registration and integrity. The first bill requires county auditors and the Secretary of State to maintain and make voter registration files available to the public for free. Right now, accessing those records costs $2,500, which voter integrity advocate Rick Wieble from Elkton says is way too high. VERBATIM: We also found election corruption in the records, where there were blank records in the voter histories. We identified that and were able to take corrective action with the county auditors. But we shouldn’t be the ones whistleblowing at that kind of an expense, that’s ridiculous.” The second bill gives voters the option to keep certain personal information, like phone numbers and email addresses, private. Both bills are now set to be reviewed by the full House.
