SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A rise in South Dakota immigration arrests is sparking public questions and concerns. On Friday, Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead shared some answers while giving his reassurance on their role in the area. He joined South Dakota Voices for Peace in a Facebook Live video, saying there’s a lot of misinformation from recent social media posts about ICE raids. Sheriff Milstead clarified that ICE makes immigration arrests and not local law enforcement. However, detainees are put in a hold for around 48 hours at the Minnehaha County Jail because there is no federal jail to hold them. There’s been at least six cases there in the past week. Sheriff Milstead says it’s no surprise to him seeing heightened ICE activity with President Trump’s push to crack down on illegal immigration. But Milstead and South Dakota Voices for Peace echoed they do not want the community to be afraid and will continue to provide the public with accurate and factual information.
