MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell City Council has approved an agreement with the state and FEMA to remove homes on the 500 block of West Ash Avenue due to flood risks from Dry Run Creek. The Mitchell Daily Republic reports that residents in the area requested relocation assistance after flooding in 2019 and 2024. The city will fund 15% of the project, with FEMA covering 75% and the state covering 10%. Two homes will be purchased and demolished, and the land will be converted into a park. The FEMA program is voluntary, and homeowners can choose whether or not to participate. A new floodplain map for the area is expected by May of 2026.
