PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) As the bill to fund South Dakota’s new men’s prison ends in defeat, another measure is advancing in the Legislature that would create an Incarceration Task Force. Senate Bill 124, sponsored by Senator Kevin Jensen, narrowly passed out of Monday’s House State Affairs Committee meeting by a 5-4 vote. It would establish a ten-member group of DOC officials and state lawmakers to study South Dakota’s incarceration issues and review the current facilities. Any recommendations would need to be reported no later than the beginning of this December in an effort to come up with a better plan for a future prison site. The state’s DOC has come out against the legislation.
