MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Starting July 1 handguns will be allowed on South Dakota’s public college and technical school campuses. The new law, passed during this year’s legislative session, lets students, staff, and visitors with enhanced or restricted enhanced concealed carry permits bring firearms, stun guns, or pepper spray onto Board of Regents property. Weapons can still be restricted in certain areas, like labs with hazardous materials, or at special events but only if armed security and metal detectors are in place. The Board of Regents will review related policies at its mid-July meeting. The new rule takes effect ahead of the fall semester, which starts August 25.
