MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Starting July 1st, South Dakota notaries will no longer need to post a $5,000 surety bond to get or renew their commission. That change comes after lawmakers passed House Bill 1133 earlier this year. Secretary of State Monae Johnson says the move helps streamline the process and reduce confusion. All other application steps, including the $30 fee and oath of office, will stay the same. The new rule applies to all notaries applying or renewing after July 1st.
