MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Firesteel Park may become the dumping site for sediment from Lake Mitchell’s dredging project, creating a mound up to 20 feet high across the 46-acre park. But first, a cultural resources survey will determine if historical or cultural artifacts are present. The Mitchell City Council approved a $7,500 contract with Kogel Archeological Consulting for the study, which includes records research and a pedestrian survey. If artifacts are found, the city will have to find another location. The sediment, rich in phosphorus and nitrogen, will be stored behind berms to prevent runoff. Meanwhile, the Lake Mitchell jetty is open, featuring new lake access points and future plans for a gazebo and docks once dredging is finished.
