MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Mitchell High School and the Mitchell Athletic Booster Club have announced four inductees for the Mitchell High School Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

Dan Carlson, Raven (Morgan) Ellwein, Amelia (Rew) Endres and Lonnie Moody will be honored during an open house from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Bradley’s in Mitchell. A program will begin at 7 p.m.

The inductees will also be recognized at halftime of the Kernel Bowl football game Saturday, Sept. 12.

Dan Carlson

Carlson has supported Mitchell High School athletics for more than three decades, joining the Kernel training staff in 1992 and serving Mitchell athletes and events for 34 years.

He received the Outstanding Service to Mitchell Senior High award in 2005 and 2010. Following Mitchell’s 2016 state football championship, Carlson received the team’s “Fly Around and Finish” award and a state championship ring.

Carlson’s service in Mitchell has also included careers in law enforcement and firefighting. He was named Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 1976 and later joined the Mitchell Fire Department. In 1995, Gov. Bill Janklow appointed Carlson as South Dakota state fire marshal.

Carlson also spent 30 years on the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Committee and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2000.

A Spirit Lake, Iowa, native, Carlson graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1975. He and his wife, Kathy, now live in Sioux Falls.

Raven (Morgan) Ellwein

Ellwein, a 1996 Mitchell High School graduate, played during one of the most successful stretches in Kernel girls basketball history.

She helped Mitchell finish as the Class AA runner-up in 1993 before the Kernels went undefeated at 23-0 and captured the 1994 ESD, district and Class AA state championships. Mitchell returned to the state tournament in 1995 and again finished as runner-up.

Ellwein earned Academic All-State and State AA All-Tournament Team honors in 1995.

She continued her basketball career at Dakota Wesleyan University, becoming a four-year starter and scoring 1,302 career points. Ellwein earned Academic All-American recognition and was a three-time DWU Scholar Athlete. She was later inducted into the DWU Hall of Fame.

Ellwein lives in Huron with her husband, Jay, and their five children.

Amelia (Rew) Endres

Endres, a 2010 Mitchell High School graduate, won eight individual state gymnastics championships during her career with the Kernels.

A five-time All-ESD and All-Tournament Team selection, Endres won three consecutive state vault championships from 2006-08. At the 2009 state meet, she captured championships in vault, bars, beam, floor and the all-around.

She also helped Mitchell win back-to-back team state championships in 2007 and 2008.

Endres graduated early in 2010 to begin her collegiate gymnastics career at Arizona State University, competing in vault, bars and beam through 2013. She was named ASU Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2013.

Endres later returned to the Mitchell gymnastics program as an assistant coach, helping the Kernels win state championships in 2014, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

She lives near Ethan with her husband, Josh, and their two children and works as a physician assistant for Avera Orthopedics in Mitchell.

Lonnie Moody

Moody, a 2000 Mitchell High School graduate, excelled in track and field and baseball.

A four-time MHS Most Valuable Athlete in track, Moody won the 200-meter state championship in 1998 and the 100- and 200-meter titles in 1999.

His school-record time of 10.60 seconds in the 100 meters remains the Mitchell High School standard.

Moody also helped Mitchell Post 18 capture the 1999 South Dakota American Legion State Championship and earned American Legion All-State honors that season.

He continued his baseball career at Dakota Wesleyan University, earning All-GPAC honors three times and helping the Tigers win conference championships in 2004 and 2005.

Moody currently lives in Pierre, where he works as a systems administrator for the South Dakota Lottery. He has two children.
