Summer officially ends for students in the Mitchell School District today, as it is Back to School Day. Mitchell Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Graves says over the summer, the normal cosmetic upgrades were made to the schools including painting, ceiling replacements, and LED lighting upgrades.

South Dakota education officials say there are many teaching positions in the state which remain unfilled. Dr. Graves says Mitchell has been fortunate in that regard, with the district having all positions filled in May.  He says paras and custodians were hired over the summer, adding that they are “full-staffed.”

E-learning was an option for students at the beginning of the last school year due to the COVID pandemic. Dr. Graves says that is not being offered this year and adds that it will be nice to return to normal today.

With the start of school, motorists are reminded to use extra caution with the increased vehicle and foot traffic, to obey school zones and crossing guards, and to stop for school buses.
