Changing Mitchell’s downtown parking structure to diagonal parking would add between 70 and 120 parking spots depending on the angle. The issue was discussed at Monday night’s Mitchell City Council meeting. Mitchell Public Works Director Joe Schroeder said moving from parallel parking to 45-degree angle parking from 6th to Railroad would mean 206 parking spots, while 60-degree angle parking would create 258 total spots. There are currently 134 parking spots on Main Street from 6th to Railroad.
Schroeder said the switch would mean changes for delivery trucks downtown, as the center lane currently used by those trucks would be eliminated. He also said a change to diagonal parking could affect snow removal downtown with cars potentially needing to be cleared from the downtown streets for a longer period of time.
The item was for discussion only, so no action was taken. The council would like public feedback on downtown parking.
