PIERRE, S.D. (SDBA) — The Joint Appropriations Committee hearing on Monday on the Department of Corrections wasn’t explicitly about the location of the proposed new men’s prison–but the $700 million project did get some attention from legislators and citizens.
Department of Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko emphasized the need for a new facility to replace the outdated men’s state penitentiary in Sioux Falls. She cited concerns about safety and the deteriorating condition of The Hill.
Despite Wasko’s assurances of thorough planning, two citizens from Lincoln County expressed skepticism during the hearing.
Eric Hohman, a retired banker and newspaper publisher, raised concerns about potential cost overruns and increased operating costs.
Madeline Voegeli, head of Neighbors Opposed to Prison Expansion, questioned whether a new facility would address the 30% staffing vacancy rate in the men’s prison and suggested alternative sites.
The committee took no immediate action on the budget or prison construction issues.
