MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) At the Mitchell City Council meeting on Tuesday, the Corn Palace and its plaza were the big topics of discussion. The council is considering a major upgrade to the outdoor plaza, with ideas like a new playground, synthetic lawn, more parking, and water features. The price tag for the project is around $1.6 million, and while the city has money set aside for it, construction likely won’t begin until 2026. City Council also looked at plans to improve accessibility with new ADA-compliant seating and railings, which would cost about $60,000. Other renovations were discussed, like expanding event space by removing the raised stage. Some council members raised concerns about whether this is the best way to spend taxpayer dollars. The council didn’t make any firm decisions, and said the discussion will continue at their next meeting in February.
