PIERRE, S.D.  (MITCHELLNOW) Lawmakers in Pierre voted Monday to send a school meal funding bill to the Joint Appropriations Committee with a “do not pass” recommendation. The House Education Committee voted 13-2 against House Bill 1089, which aimed to cover meal copays for students who qualify for reduced-price meals. Some legislators who opposed the bill raised concerns about food waste in school lunchrooms. The bill would have helped eligible students by covering their 40-cent lunch and 30-cent breakfast copays. The Appropriations Committee will now take a closer look at the proposal.
