MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell Public Library has seen a sharp drop in teen usage since it stopped helping schools set up student library accounts in 2022. While other library services are thriving, officials say teen program attendance is low, and spending on teen programs dropped 70% in 2024. The Mitchell Daily Republic reports that the librarian is working to re-engage teens with initiatives like a Dungeons & Dragons program. Teachers note that social media and technology are major distractions, making it harder for students to focus on reading.
