PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota is making headway in raising teacher pay, but progress has been gradual. The state’s Teacher Compensation Review Board has started its yearly task of drafting recommendations for the legislature on how to improve salaries. Since its creation a decade ago, the board’s efforts have been slow to move the state out of the bottom ranks nationally for teacher pay. However, Caitlyn Scott of Marzano Research says there’s reason for optimism this year. Scott said one advantage is that South Dakota’s lower cost of living helps teachers’ salaries stretch further compared to neighboring states.
