SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Attorney General Marty Jackley says 24 inmates have been indicted in connection with last month’s disturbance at the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls. The May 27 incident left 14 inmates injured and put four in the hospital. Jackley says the defendants are accused of orchestrating violent assaults that put both staff and other inmates at risk. The charges include aggravated assault, simple assault, and rioting with some defendants facing up to 80 years in prison if convicted. A Minnehaha County Grand Jury handed down the indictments last week. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Department of Corrections Inspector General led the investigation.
