MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Big changes are coming to Mitchell’s Corn Palace. After years of discussion, the old seats will finally be removed following this year’s Corn Palace Festival. Mitchell Public Works Director Joe Schroeder says the goal is to complete the seat replacement before Dakota Wesleyan University’s basketball season kicks off in late October. The project will bring 1,538 new seats to the west side of the building. The City Council previously approved over $567,000 for the project, including new ADA-compliant handrails and seat padding. Preparation work has already been bid out, totaling more than $94,000. Despite the construction, the Corn Palace will stay open to tourists, with walking tours and exhibits still available.
